Bringing a Classic Porsche 911 Carrera 993 Engine Bay Back to Life

At IceBlastPro, we recently had the incredible opportunity to work on a truly iconic vehicle—the engine bay of a 90s Porsche 911 Carrera 993. This classic car has been meticulously cared for by its current owner, making our job both a privilege and a joy. The customer wanted the engine brought back to an almost new condition and wanted a safe option to do this, particularly as it is an air-cooled engine with a cooling fan. They came to the right decision that dry ice blasting was the best option.

The Icon of Performance: Porsche 911 Carrera 993

The Porsche 911 Carrera 993 is renowned for its air-cooled engine, a feature that sets it apart from many other classic cars. Air-cooled engines are known for their durability and unique engineering, which does not require the same kind of cooling system as most modern vehicles. This particular model has stood the test of time, largely due to its robust design and the passionate care of its owner.

Challenge Accepted: Clearing Decades of Grime

When the car arrived at our workshop, the engine bay was coated with a thick layer of grime and build-up—a common issue for classics that have seen many miles. From the air boxes to the engine metal and plated pipes, each component had its own history written in layers of dirt. Notably, much of the surface being aluminium meant that once cleaned, the transformation would be both dramatic and visually stunning. We were all excited to see the result of this one.

Precision Cleaning with Dry Ice Blasting

Our team set to work with our specialised dry ice blasting equipment, known for its non-abrasive yet highly effective cleaning capabilities. The process took approximately three hours, a perfect span for the owner to enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local pub.

Dry ice cleaning was the ideal choice for this project because it can clean without damaging the delicate aluminium components. The dry ice pellets sublimate upon contact, effortlessly lifting dirt and contaminants from the engine components. We meticulously targeted deep crevices around the fan and other under-components with our specialist nozzles, ensuring a thorough clean that this prestigious car deserves.

We offer Lanoguard complimentary with our treatments, but it is not recommended for engine bay cleans. However, dry ice blasting alone removes contaminants that can deteriorate the vehicle's performance over time, helping it to go on for longer.
